In Rwanda, the most popular way to get around is by motorcycle taxi. In fact, being a motorcycle taxi driver is the 2nd largest profession in the country. But, of the 20,000 moto taxi drivers in the nation's capital, one (that's right, ONE!) is a women.
If so many Rwandan women live in grinding poverty, why don't more join the ranks of one of Rwanda's largest professions? Well, this sad reality exists because many people in Africa believe women can’t be drivers. People say women are too weak, too unskilled, and too busy with household chores.
At the SafeMotos Institute, we think this is nonsense. We'd like to put our money where our mouth is, but first...we need the money!
The SafeMotos Institute is a U.S. non-profit (EIN: 815398847) working to economically empower Rwandan women by training them to enter the motorcycle taxi industry. We have arranged for a group of Rwandan women to become fully trained and equipped as motorcycle taxi drivers. We just need your help to raise the rest of the money to pay for their training course, and supply their motorcycles, helmets, and safety gear.
We are confident that this program will not only economically empower these women to join a huge industry and earn a good living, but will also show the world that women can do anything they put their mind to (and can certainly kick ass on a motorcycle just like men can).
All the arrangements are in place, so we're hoping to raise $6,000 in the next two weeks so the women can begin their training shortly. All donations will be used to pay the costs of training and equipping the women.
We have also inked an agreement with Rwanda's fastest growing moto-taxi company stating that they will employ any woman who graudates from our program. So, we know these women will end up employed!
Thank you for your time, and please share our story and consider making a donation.
