Safe Sleep for Eila

Eila is three years old, non-verbal, autistic, and has sleep disturbance disorders. She operates on very little sleep and we have seen the hours of 1-4 a.m. more than we care to. She loves to run, is quite inquisitive and clever, and there is very little that she is afraid of. This presents quite the challenge with keeping her safe. This week Eila started climbing out of her crib. Many kids simply transition to a toddler bed by this age but that is not a safe option for Eila. She must be supervised at all times and her room itself poses threats to her safety even if we remove all items.  we cannot simply lock the door to ensure she stays safe. She is quite the investigator of all things, outlet covers, the smallest hole or gap, and everything else you haven’t thought of yet. So, we need an enclosed bed as soon as possible. And we need it to also be of the safest variety. Not all “safety beds” are safe. In fact, the FDA has identified 7 zones of entrapment in beds like these. The Courtney Bed has made sure to address these 7 zones in the construction and design. The trouble is that these types of specialty devices are often quite expensive. The Courtney bed is no exception. Because it is considered a class 1 hospital bed it should be covered by our insurance, but only after jumping through many, many hoops and claims and appeals. We simply don’t have time to wait on the very slow red tape to unfurl. She is unsafe NOW and none of us will sleep through the night as we take shifts making sure she is safe.
