Support Noho Neighbors Facing Encampment Eviction!
This is a call to action to help our neighbors in Northampton currently living under the South Street Bridge. The city is kicking them out of the last remaining sheltered area in town. You can help them find relief and temporary shelter during the worst of this crisis!
Details: The South Street Bridge is the last remaining encampment in a covered space (offering storm protection). Covered pedestrian spaces like this are essential for safety while unhoused - storms regularly drop limbs and trees on tents & people, injuring folks & destroying belongings.
The town is trying to take the space under this bridge for a construction project starting Thursday, July 15th. These are people's homes. Evicting people who are already displaced is gross and inhumane. The town & Mayor Narkewicz are not offering any alternative covered locations—temporary or permanent—for unhoused residents to relocate to. The benches have been removed from Main St, there’s still no public bathrooms downtown, and now the last safe refuge for houseless folks is being uprooted. Northampton calls itself “Paradise City,” but whose paradise?
Construction equipment is already there. We recently learned that residents would not be physically evicted, just forced to coexist in unsafe conditions with construction equipment, dust and noise. This is unacceptable! This is slated to go down TOMORROW, Thursday, July 15th.
Mayor Narkewicz! City government! It’s gone too far!
Several of the folks living in this area are understandably STRESSED and are asking for help from their community.
