Safe Housing For Sarah!

Donation protected
Hello World! I'm Sarah, and I am raising money to help make my new apartment accessible for my disabilities so I can live there. I was born with very abnormal feet and ankles, and my health took a turn for the worse after some bad medical treatment in my early 20's. I moved to Rochester 7.5 years ago to be closer to Mayo clinic.

I have now been forced to move from my apartment of 7 years to make way for a new downtown development. This has caused immense hardship for me, negatively affecting my health and my finances. I have spent countless hours researching the affordable housing crisis in South East Minnesota, fair housing laws, relocations, gentrification, local government procedures, and reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities. Despite my best efforts, I was not able to save my building. The priority of the developers and management company was to get me out as soon as possible, even when there was no place I could safely go.

My old apartment fit my needs perfectly since I had put substantial time, effort, and money into making it work. I have an impressive collection of rare diseases and conditions, so my housing needs are unique. Due to the housing crisis I was unable to find an apartment that would allow me to function independently. So, I have had to pay to remodel one into something I can use.

At this point I have $10,000 on my credit card that was spent to try to make my new apartment habitable for me with my disabilities. Now I am trying to scrape together $4,000 more to level the floor because it is so slanted and uneven that simply standing or walking in the new apartment places painful strain on my feet and ankles. This has been a huge ordeal for me and my family.

The worst part is that I was finally starting to get better after 6 years of dedicating my entire life to physical therapy and managing my health needs. Now I am getting worse again because I don't have a living space that allows me to maximize my function. Life is never secure when one is disabled. Every day is an experience in problem solving.

If you are able, I would be so grateful for any help you can give. Also, please share my story so it may reach more people. Having a stable home is so important because without a stable home my health will just get worse and worse. I'm only 40, I don't want to give up and go live in a nursing home for the rest of my life. I've struggled with disability for 17 years now. A stable home that fits me makes a huge difference in my ability to function, my pain levels, and my physical and mental health.

Any money I receive will go only to helping me pay for my disability housing needs and medical expenses. Thank you so much for reading and for any assistance you may be able to provide.
Yours truly,
Sarah
