Sadie's Scoliosis Treatment

Donation protected
Ok everyone. Here I am putting some pride aside. Those of you who know me know it’s difficult for me to ask for help, or admit I can’t do everything on my own. Those of you who don’t know me, here’s a bit of where I’m at right now… I am a 28-year-old single mother of 5 children. Aside from being a full-time mom I am working and going to school.

This however is not about me! I am raising my adorable, smart, funny, brave, kind little sister Sadie. She is in need of some financial support for her medical expenses. Anyone who knows Sadie knows that she is one tuff cookie! This girl is outstanding in every way. She has faced so many trials and challenges in her young little life. Our mother passed away from a severe stoke she suffered while on chemotherapy. Sadie was 8 years old at the time. She pulled through like a champ and made the best of her new life. Then our father passed away from a sudden heart attack 2 years later! That was a big adjustment for her. I became her guardian at that time. Sadie went from the more quite life she had to the fast paced somewhat chaotic life I live with my large family. She is now 16 years old. She is ambitious and determined. This cutie is rocking at life and in many ways, I look up to her. She knows who she is and has a very calm and confident demeanor. She was very behind educationally as a child, due to her circumstances and limited opportunities. Now she is in a challenging college program, exceeding at her studies, and skyrocketing academically! Sadie is kind, selfless, and the most responsible teen you’ve met!

Sadly, Sadie has developed severe scoliosis. For the last year and a half, we’ve been working with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon to explore any options we had to correct it without having surgery. It came to a point where he said that surgery was the only option he had to offer. We scheduled the appointment for this summer. Sadie’s spine curvature in her thoracic spine is very large and would require she have 11 vertebrae fused together. The closer the surgery came, the sadder and more depressed she became. Not only was the surgery something that she was uncomfortable with and fearful of, but this surgery would greatly impact her quality of life moving forward. The surgeon had explained what activities she would no longer be able to do; as well as some of the serious pain and claustrophobia many patients experience. If she had had the surgery, especially at her young age, it would be very likely it’d lead to many more surgeries that would be necessary later in her life.

We were both devastated about the whole thing. I researched, almost obsessively, what else was out there that could be a better solution. I finally found a doctor that uses the SpineCor brace.

This brace brought us so much hope! We went to meet with him as soon as we could. He evaluated Sadie and her x-rays. He was confident that the SpineCor brace will be very beneficial for her. While we were there he rotated her spine back into place to show how the brace will work. For the first time in years, Sadie’s pain was instantly relieved. We left there enthusiastic and full of optimism. We got to the car and Sadie just sobbed; crying tears of joy for a new solution.

We cancelled her surgery and have been trying the last 2 months to figure out how on earth we were going to cover the expenses. Our insurance does not cover this particular kind of treatment. It is very common in Europe but not something understood or practiced often here in the states; as surgery is our usually go to. The brace it’s self is $3800. The doctor visits to fit and adjust the brace, as well as the training and physical therapy they will give adds up very quickly to an overwhelming amount for our family. The cost of the brace has to be paid up front before she can start her treatments. Sadie is mostly grown but has some growing left to go. If we can quickly get her in the brace and doing the physical therapy before her last growth spert that would be ideal.

$6500 total is how much it will cost for her for the next two years of treatments. I am hoping that we will get the support we need. Every little bit would be amazing. If you are in a position to help; we would be incredibly appreciative. It would mean so much to me and take a ton of stress off, but for Sadie it would be life changing!
