Sabemos Parir

Sabemos Parir is a budding home birth midwifery practice in Puerto Rico conceived by Marla Rodríguez Morales  and Maryann Incoronata Colella, CPM. Our dream is to provide full spectrum care at sliding scale and affordable rates throughout the island.

THE MIDWIVES:

Maryann Incoronata had her own practice as a full spectrum doula in Boston before attending the MEAC- Accredited midwifery program at Maternidad La Luz, a birth center and school on the US/ Mexico Border. While in Boston she volunteered as a doula for Brigham and Women’s Adolescent Reproductive Health Services and for what is now known as the Boston Abortion Support Collective. Originally from Los Angeles, Maryann moved to Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria to be closer to her partner’s family. She has recently been certified by the North American Registry of Midwives.

Marla Rodriguez grew up in Naranjito, PR, and worked as a full spectrum doula in San Juan before attending Maternidad La Luz. She trained with Doula Caribe and the Boston Abortion Support Collective. In 2015, she was diagnosed with third stage Hodgkin's lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy for six months. Soon after finishing chemo, she decided to pursue her passion for midwifery and enrolled in the rigorous program at MLL. She currently works in a law office, saving money to sit the NARM exam for certification.

WHAT WE NEED:

It's been one year since our graduation from midwifery school, and we're asking our community and friends abroad to support us in the creation of a sustainable practice. We’re raising funds for equipment including oxygen tanks, pulse oximeters, a microscope, medications, a hemoglobinometer, and all of the many items required to provide quality prenatal and postpartum care. We also need to build a website to connect with our clients and we hope to have some funds left for continuing education (such as a course on intrauterine insemination) in order to expand the care we give. Your contributions will allow us to start this important work.

We have created wish lists of things we need if you prefer to send actual equipment (because there is a processing fee on Gofundme). We are also happy to receive similar items from other distributors or second-hand equipment in working condition from other midwifery practices.

As midwives, doulas, and monitrices working within a Reproductive Justice  framework, we want to build a practice that values all  decisions and experiences throughout the span of our reproductive lives. We aim to serve all kinds of families, especially those who may be otherwise marginalized by the medical system. In a climate of obstetric violence, we seek to provide collaborative, continuous care in a manner that is empowering, creative, and supportive.

We are so grateful for your contribution towards getting our practice up and running!
