Saba's Trek to Teach in Thailand

Hi all! My name is Saba Davis, and this April 10, 2015 I will begin my 1-year service as a volunteer elementary and middle school English teacher in Northeast Thailand! As this has been my lifelong dream, I am contributing all of my personal savings to help get me there. However, there are major expenses I will not be able to cover on my own. Your valuable contributions will help me to cover my roundtrip airfare, pre-departure expenses, room/ board fees, insurance and visa fees, and health and living related expenses for my upcoming exciting year in Thailand. Any amount counts and is greatly appreciated!! Below you can learn more about my deep interest in teaching and my lifelong calling to Thailand.

A little bit more about me: I am a 22 year old Angelino (Los Angeles, CA) and alumna from Bucknell University with degrees in Anthropology and Spanish language. I am honored to be a Posse Scholar, which enhanced and complemented my college experience. My interests are travel and challenging myself to learn of the intersectionalities of identity amongst cultures.

Why teaching?

I jumped into the opportunity of being an English tutor for struggling LA elementary/middle school students, serendipitously. It takes a confident, strong and patient individual to work with youth and up to this point I was sure I didn’t fit the bill. I wouldn’t be ready enough to open up the hardened exterior of students who are neglected by the Los Angeles public education system. I wouldn’t be confident enough to provide solace to low-income parents concerned that their child would fail while also speaking candidly, and I was sure I couldn’t inspire students to reach beyond bleak realities.

But I was. And I did. I am at a loss for words when parents have shared with me they’ve noticed improvement in their child’s reading comprehension, and writing capabilities just in a few weeks time.  It has been an honor to receive flurries of smiles, hugs, and “I miss you’s” from current and past students. These impactful experiences I have had have gifted me with fulfillment and purpose to my life, and the confidence to challenge myself more through new and rewarding experiences.  I aim to continue to do this through teaching in the most rural region of Thailand, in a community where the majority of the population knows little to no English.

Why THAILAND?

While my introduction to teaching English occurred quite fortuitously, my passion to travel to Thailand has been present for a long time. I want to learn about the culture and spirituality of the people and the country. I am beyond excited to embark on this journey and it brings me great joy to consider this wondrous experience. This opportunity is the right choice for me, and I hope to make this dream a reality.

I will be keeping a photo blog to document my experiences in Thailand, so you can remain updated and travel with me! Thank you so much for visiting my page! Please share it with your friends!
