SAAFI COVID 19 Impact appeal

Throughout this pandemic, SAAFI staff and volunteers have been working selflessly to ensure the vulnerable and elderly in our community have food supplies, medicine (prescriptions), and other essential needs that enable them to keep safe in these difficult times.
Brent is one of the capital’s most disadvantaged boroughs with one of the highest COVID-19 death rates in England and Wales, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS). Last year, unemployment levels in Brent were higher than the national average and many people in our community face an increasingly perilous financial situation, with many struggling with food poverty.
The Coronavirus pandemic has hit our community hard. Families have been forced to cope with prolonged hospitalization, redundancies, the mental and emotional effects of self-isolation, as well as bereavement. Many of those who lost their life to COVID-19 were the sole breadwinners of their families. SAAFI has stood with these families in these difficult times and will continue to do so.
As a community organisation, we are providing a safety net to many residents in Bren, particularly in Church End, Harlesden, Dudden Hill, Willesden Green, and Kensal Green, where we have been undertaking frontline work; providing emotional and mental health support and emergency food supplies.
We need your help to raise £10,000 urgently to cover the continuation of our efforts.
During the pandemic, SAAFI provided the following support:
· First two weeks from 13 May: 152 calls received for information and reassurance
· A total of 2530 meals and food bank distributed from 23 Mar – 21st of June (everyday/7 days a week)
· Total calls received: 598 calls to 21st June. Advice, information and guidance which some of them were complex cases.
o 40% of them were mental health related cases and other health issues
o 25% housing issues, homelessness and housing benefit
o 13% Job loss, redundancy and applications for benefits.
o 12% referral for various issues mainly children and education.
o 10% domestic abuse
