Magda's Mission Remission

Hi, My name is Marta and I am writing on behalf of my youngest sister Magdalena. I want to thank you for taking the time to read this message and for hopefully sharing it with anyone that you think would be willing to help.

Magdalena is 25 years young. She was born and raised in Gdynia, Poland. On April 14, 2014 she was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. A few months prior to her diagnosis Magdalena had just married her college sweetheart. Shortly after getting married Magdalena started experiencing some weird symptoms that she thought were brought on by stress: intense itching all over her body, drenching night sweats and her lymph nodes began to swell. Magdalena went in to the doctor; x-rays and blood work were quickly run and upon receiving her results, she was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Scans and biopsies were ordered and it was determined that Magdalena had late stage IV Hodgkins Lymphoma and it had spread to her lungs, liver, spleen and thymus as well as multiple lymph nodes.

Magdalena began chemotherapy in May 2014 and finished chemo in December 2014. In January 2015 she was given news that she was in remission and chemo was complete. Her scans still showed a tumor in her chest that was shrinking and slightly larger than normal lymph nodes, but she was told she was well and that she would continue to improve over time and that her next check-up would be in 6 months. She scheduled an appointment for June 2015 and we all sighed and cried with relief.

However, 3 weeks ago, Magdalena’s lymph nodes began swelling again and she went straight to the doctor. Blood work and scans were done and the cancer has returned with a vengeance to the lymphatic system and her lungs. Magdalena’s cancer is chemotherapy resistant and a very insidious strain of Hodgkins Lymphoma, she is in the 4% of patients that do not respond to typical therapies. There is 1 new drug that could potentially put Magdalena’s cancer in remission for good and give her a future she can only dream of without this medication. The name of this drug is: Brentuximab Vedotin, it is very expensive and not covered by her insurance. The approximate cost for a full course of treatment is $115,000.

This treatment is Magda’s last hope for a future and with your help she could get there.
