Help for Laurie

Donation protected
Two cancers, a near fatal motor vehicle accident (requiring a Life Flight Helicopter to survive) and now while recovering from those situations, another vehicle accident which totaled their van and brought about 3 more surgeries for Laurie.  Next is rehab once stable.  Then one of the biggest obstacles out there will have to be faced – how to pay for it all, including finding a new van with a lift – and survive day-to-day paying the ordinary household bills.

This husband and wife team went from being Santa and Mrs. Claus for an abundance of causes including Toys for Tots, United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, the Shriner’s, St Mary’s Children’s Home, and other charities and causes in the community, to facing one obstacle after another.  They constantly gave to everyone including animals in need.  They used their free time to spread love and cheer wherever they could.

As you may know, Laurie and Gavin met at a time in their life when they should be enjoying life and making lots of good memories. Prior to their romance, they each had experienced a life time of trials. Now the trials continue and are adding up to financial issues down the road!

Gavin has been an upstanding person even as a young man and tried several branches of the military to serve his country, but was turned down due to physical limitations.  Gavin has multiple handicaps including multiple joint problems, hearing loss and a prosthetic leg after his serious motor vehicle accident last year, and continues to have balance and mobility problems.   He is currently using a wheelchair for long distances to prevent falls.

A few years ago, they both found out they had cancer.  The news came a month apart around Christmas!  Each one then battled complications like champions.  They are still affected by the long recovery, including trying to pay off the medical bills.

Laurie is a dedicated veterinarian in a small clinic after getting her degree later in life.  She worked endless hours and frequently took animals home to give them the care through the night that they needed.

To say the least, their work in the community reflects their love and faith in God.  With everything that has happened, they both remain very faithful and attend church regularly.

Now they were in an automobile accident and Laurie was seriously injured.  She had to have surgery on both hips and her ankle to repair fractures.  She is currently having a lot of pain and will not be able to bear weight or stand for multiple weeks. She will be needing rehab and faces a long recovery.   She is the sole provider for Gavin and herself, and it will be quite some time before she can return to work. The surgeons cannot give a return to work estimate until the rehabilitation progresses.

The van was a total loss and it will be vital that they replace it and the lift.  Without it, they have no transportation for the immediate future.

Although the estimates of their bills are a long way from being complete as there will be many more unexpected bills and an unknown future.  We know there will be many expenses before any modifications to the house are considered for safety and mobility.

To all the friends, co-workers and supporters for my sister Laurie Green Middleton and fans of “Santa Gavin and the Mrs.”, we are asking for help with this latest serious event in their life.  We assume this amount will be a lot less than needed, so we would appreciate any support you can provide.  Our goal is $40,000.
