Let's show the Thompson family some love!

A lot of you may know one of our beloved KMHA coaches, Jeff Thompson. Jeff has been coaching with us for 8 years, and he plays such a big part of our hockey community. He is dedicated, and loves to see kids realize their potential on and off the ice, and to help them build team skills, and see them develop over their hockey careers. Jeff has 3 kids, and one of his sons played in the KMHA as well. If you’ve got a son or daughter in house league, you’ve seen Jeff and his family out cheering on players, both on the bench and in the stands. One of Jeff’s biggest cheerleaders, is his wife, Sandy. Sandy loved going to every game, and you could always see her sitting in the stands with her coffee, while cheering on every kid, not just her own. A lot of teammates often called her ‘mom’, as the Thompson house was always an open door, and a safe space for the kids to hang out, and have fun.

In 2017, Sandy was diagnosed with a tentorial meningioma. For those of you who aren’t brain surgeons, it is a non-cancerous, slow-growing brain tumour. In the first 18 months, the tumour continued to grow, and on November 30th 2018, her and Jeff took a trip down to Hamilton General Hospital, to have the tumour removed. A week later, Sandy woke in the middle of the night with a headache. A headache so bad, that Jeff had to take her to St. Mary’s Hospital. Within just a few short hours, Sandy was non-responsive, and her vitals were off the charts. She caught an infection in her brain, as a result of her incision and her skull not being sealed correctly, and was leaking cerebrospinal fluid from the incision behind her right ear. She spent 3 days in the ICU. Since then, she has had 5 corrective surgeries, to close the initial fluid leak and to have a shunt put in place. Her recovery has been slow, and she has been left with permanent deficits. As of today, she is still in the hospital, battling yet another infection.

As you may imagine, Sandy has been out of work now since before the first surgery. Jeff and his kids are mentally and physically exhausted.  There seems to be no end to the family’s financial burdens.

This family has been through more than enough.

Let's help by easing their financial distress and take a big burden off their plate. Let's show this wonderful family how our community takes care of each other.

Every little bit counts and would mean the world to them.
