Emily’s Fight Against Lymphoma and Thyroid Cancer

Emily is an outgoing 16 year old girl living in Hunterdon Co., NJ who is an 11th grade honor student and enjoys being a cheerleader. In May 2017 she went to the doctor for a routine annual physical so she could participate in cheerleading where the doctor discovered a lump on her thyroid.  She was sent for further tests and it was discovered she had a mass attached to her thyroid. Surgery was required and the mass and partial thyroid were removed. The initial diagnosis by the surgeon was the mass was benign and Emily would be fine but a routine biopsy of the mass later revealed it was cancerous. This misdiagnoses lead the family to initially believe that she was in good health when her condition was in fact getting worse.  Upon getting the biopsy results she was brought to the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP) for diagnosis and a plan of action.

Another surgery was performed to remove the remaining piece of thyroid and a few lymph nodes adjacent to the thyroid. Emily was diagnosed with 2 types of cancer, B-cell non-Hodgkin’s  lymphoma and  thyroid cancer. She has since started chemotherapy and is on 18 different medications used during the various stages of her treatments, chemo-therapy, pain management, etc. She will also most likely require radiation treatments to combat the thyroid cancer after her chemotherapy treatments are completed. She is experiencing many side effects due to the procedures she has and continues to go through including ultrasounds, needle aspirations, pet scans, spinal tap, 2 partial thyroidectomies, bone biopsy, echocardiogram, weekly bloodwork, and many in-patient and out-patient hospital visits.  No child should have to suffer through these procedures and treatments. Her mom has also previously been diagnosed with a treatable but not curable form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and has also undergone chemotherapy and will most likely require future treatments.

Emily and her family are highly impressed by her oncology team at CHOP and the extraordinarily caring and compassionate oncology team at the Morristown Medical Center Valerie Center.  After her journey she wishes to become a pediatric oncologist or a researcher.  Her heart is full of compassion for all the other children she has met with cancer during her treatments. She also loves animals and has two dogs, 2 cats and a hedgehog.

With each doctor’s appointment there is a cost.  Every procedure generates another bill.  The trips to Philadelphia and Morristown and long hours at both hospitals mean more expenses that the family couldn’t prepare for or anticipate.  The family would be grateful for any help.  They are looking to offset 2017 – 2018 out of pocket costs for Emily’s care.  Our goal is to raise $35,000 for Emily.

Emily's Dad Michael Phillips is the beneficiary of this fund.  He is collecting donations on Emily's behalf.
