Duke's Eye and Dental Surgeries

In 2014 we saw an ad for a Pug for sale. We had been looking for a dog for a while, but wanted to rehome one rather than get a puppy, so we called the number and a lady agreed to bring him for us to meet.

As soon as Duke walked into our home I knew we were meant to be his forever family, he was utterly beautiful with such a big personality. But something was very wrong. He was extremely thin for a Pug and seemed to have patches of fur missing, and his eyes looked sore. Some people have said we should not have paid the price this person was asking for Duke, but there was absolutely no way I was letting her take him back out of our care, I have never once regretted that decision.

We immediately took our boy to the vet where we were told he was malnourished, full of fleas, blind in one eye and partially sighted in the other. All of this in a one year old dog. He had obviously been used for breeding and once he had damaged his eye no one had wanted him as a stud so she needed to be rid of him.

We took him home and began the process of making him well again. He didn't know what a dog bed was, would cower when we tried to feed him, wasn't house trained and would frequently mark in his food bowl when he was done eating.

Eventually he put on weight and the fleas were gone, and he was referred to an eye specialist who have been absolutely fantastic. Duke is insured, but because his eye issues were already present it is classed as a pre existing condition and treatment is not covered.

For six years we have managed to treat his eyes with drops every day. However the specialist has now advised that the pressure in Duke's blind eye is increasing and he is in pain, removal would be the best option. We are not asking for the full amount of the surgery to be raised, but half of the cost would help us so very much, especially as we also have to buy Duke's drops every six weeks at a cost of £50 a time. Our boy also needs a tooth extraction, again dental is not covered by insurance, so half of the cost of this is also included in the total we'd like to raise.

Despite everything he went through at the beginning of his life, Duke is the most loving, sweet natured, funny and playful boy. I love him so very much and I will never stop striving to give him the happy life he deserves, which is why I'm humbly asking for your help. Thank you ❤️
