Latrines for Rural Ugandan Girls

Donation protected

The Kasiisi Project is an educational 501c3 which has been working in Western Uganda with 14 rural public primary schools serving 10,000 children, for almost 20years.  Despite huge classes and minimal resources our schools are now the best in the district with girls doing as well as boys. We have achieved this in many ways,  some innovative - providing safe journeys to school through our girls' bike program  -  but others practical and mundane - clean water for instance.

Our number 1 goal, before we even turn to improving learning opportunities, is to make sure our students come to school. Top of the list to ensure equal access to education for girls  is adequate sanitation.  Lack of toilets  impacts everyone but adolescent girls suffer disproportionally.
Our data show that girls in schools with enough latrines and washing facilities have lower absenteeism rates and show significantly better academic scores.

Last week at Kasiisi Primary School 2 latrines collapsed. There are now just 4 toilet cubicles for 535 girls.
We desparately need funding to build 2 new latrine blocks with washrooms before the new school year begins in February.
This is a critical concern because as things stand the school will be unable to open if we cannot build more latrines. This school is now the third best school in the district, including independent schools with much smaller classes and  far greater resources. For the sake of the girls at Kasiisi we need to supply the resources that keep them learning.
All of us, girls, teachers, administrators and parents will be so thankful for your support. Please make this a wonderful holiday season for 535 Ugandan girls.
