The events of this past year have sent the art world through a reckoning. Theaters have been forced to close, performances were canceled, revenues cut, and projects were suspended indefinitely. Artists have been scrambling. The dance community also faced a much-needed introspection steering artists to confront their outdated systems and re-evaluate their intentions and goals.
There are several conclusions I have come to:
First, artists are resilient and NYC is still radiating with energy. The platforms for artistic expression are simply adapting; creativity cannot be squashed by lack of funding.
The dance community has also shown unprecedented support of its fellows through free online classes, international collaborations, emotional and financial support, and most importantly, open discussions about systemic issues within the industry.
Lastly, I have come to realize that as an artist, though I am a part of this struggling community, I am also a privileged part of it. It has been a transformative year for me in terms of looking at the future of this company, and while it was disappointing to have to cancel RyderDance’s first New York Season, I too adapted and started a new video project
However, in place of holding a fundraiser for RyderDance this Holiday Season, to kick off our new video series, we have decided to host a GoFundMe for those artists that truly need the support through the Actors’ Fund. This organization directly supports dancers and artists that have suffered as a result of this pandemic and beyond. Their services include emergency financial assistance, affordable housing, health insurance counseling, supplemental employment, addiction and recovery services and so much more.
