My name is Ry (pronouns: they/them/theirs). I am a 25-year old nonbinary/ transgender individual living in NYC. I work full-time as a speech-language pathologist. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has greatly reduced my work since I work fee-for-service and not every client wanted to continue services.
I also, I have been working with my employer and legal team to help revise an exclusion from my employer provided health benefits. I was scheduled to have surgery on June 29th 2020, but due to that exclusion I had to cancel. I was devastated. Since the end of May, I have been been very depressed and anxious about not being able to have this surgery. Everything was could go wrong, was going wrong.
Luckily, I found a legal team to help.
Now, my surgery is set for July 17th 2020, and my company has really moved leaps and bounds to revise the health care plan.
With so much uncertainty in the world and loss of wages, I also have been struggling to save financially for this surgery. The financial aspect of this has been weighing heavily on my mind. The anxiety and depression I have had intensified over the potential of not having surgery made me weigh my options that actually being in debt would be less of a mental burden than living one more day in my current body.
I am also trying to collaborate with artists as well to create something we can sell as a fundraiser. I will update with more information on that when plans are ironed out. I am hoping to create something sustainable, so that we can contribute still to transgender and nonbinary people in need of surgery funds once my goal is met.
If anyone can and/or is willing to help me out I would greatly appreciate it! Help could even be sharing this.
The costs, at this moment, are a rough estimate of my out of pocket deductible ( which is over $6,000) and copays for office visits after surgery ( $70 for specialists). I may adjust the fundraiser goal to lower or higher depending on the final costs.
