Help my mom beat cancer

I never thought I would be the one to do this, but as we all find in life, sometimes things happen you cant prepare for... My mother Anne is one of my best friends, advocates and let’s be honest she is the mom we all hoped one could have. To set the stage, I honestly don’t know if I can in a short paragraph, but my mom truly is the best. From early on our house was one of joy, laughter and creativity. There was never a night family dinner was not on the table. There was never a day when it was out of the ordinary to see my mother come home with some animal. An animal she found or deemed to be lost, hungry, sad or just plane cute and she had to bring it home to care love nurture it and make it a part of our family. We grew up in what one would call a house similar to Doctor Dolittle! That’s my mom, no matter your background, your species your race and or creed, if you needed help she would welcome you to our home.

Three months ago I got the call… her trying to be strong but I could tell crying on the other line that she had breast cancer. I wanted to understand, yell, scream, cry but I had no emotions because I knew I had to be strong for her. I sat with her in the doctor’s office as they told her what treatment would be like( intensive Chemo). I held her hand as see sobbed in fear so scared of the unknown. As much as I wanted to cry with her I had to stay strong.

3 months later I sit by my mom today. I tell her she is the most beautiful woman in the world even though she lost all her hair. I try and cook anything she is craving just to see her eat… she is so sick all the time food is the last thing on her mind. I watch everyday as sick as she is, care for 5 dogs and 2 horses. Putting her own pain aside to make sure others are comforted and taken care of.  I watch my dad work 16 hours days trying to take care of her and run the family business. I try and help even though I don’t know exactly what to do… all I know is she’s my mom, this is my family and I love them and will do anything to help.

To be honest I have seen success stories on GoFundMe and have never questioned that there is good and grace in the world. Its scares me posting on here because I have never been raised to ask for help, only to offer help to those in need. But what son would I be if I did not put my own comfort aside and see if I could find help for the woman who has made me the man I am today. Medical bills and costs are …well high to say the least. On top of moms illness she still helps taking care of my grandmother her mother with Alzheimer’s. So I guess its full circle, a mother takes care of her mother and a son try’s to care for his.  Even if nothing is raised I understand because there is a lot more tragic things that effect a lot more people in this world then cancer. But to me I want to be the son that tried, I want to help my mom and my family through hard times…. And then pay it forward to someone else who needs it. For what its worth thank you to all who read this, even if we don’t hit our goal it was helpful to me to put this on paper.

Love you all!
