My mom's story:

I'm sure many of you have never heard my mom's story or even know how she's has suffered because she never speaks of herself . My mom has a rare eye disease named Acute Zonal Occult Outer Retinopathy with Visual Snow. I know...that's a mouthful, it's so rare they couldn't think of a proper name for it and I would know as I'm a nurse! Needless to say it's a horrible disease which has taken most of her eyesight. She only has peripheral vision in one of her eyes and is considered to be blind. I'm sure you can all imagine the impact this has and continues to have on her life. She can no longer drive and had to leave her job because the visual impairment lead her to be unable to keep up with her work. She has had multiple surgerys, endless doctor visits, and many medication trials just to hang on to the little she has left . The financial implications meant her and Joe had to sell their home and Joe works a full time job leaving the house at 4:30 a.m only to come home at night and turn around to start driving for Uber. I could go on and on about the financial implications but most important to me is the emotional implications it has had on my mom and that's why I wanted to do this for her. She has a chance to get some special glasses with cameras in them that would send images back to her brain and translate that image as a full picture to her peripheral vision!!! She could potentially see again!!! She could read, maybe even drive, see her kids and grandkids play sports but most importantly to me is to see her grandchildrens entire face! She could look people in the eye and see their facial expressions and communicate like she used to! She could read again which was a huge passion in her life!!! What a gift that would be if we could give my mom these glasses for Christmas and give her something back for everything she has given and given up for us! I know everyone loves their mom but mine is a true inspiration of courage, sacrifice and perseverance! She is my hero!
