The Okwabis

Mike Okwabi is the life of the party, he brings people together and has an infectious ability to make you laugh. At the end of 2022, Mike was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. The diagnosis was sudden and changed his life forever.

As some know Mike is a Type 1 Diabetic; diagnosed at 21 years old. While his diabetes has been managed over the years, things took a sharp turn last year with his kidneys. Unfortunately, diabetes can put a strain on the body and for him, it’s his kidneys. He's feeling tired and just not himself. He doesn't have the energy at the end of the day to enjoy time with his wonderful wife and gorgeous daughter like he used to, which hurts him most of all. He's angry that this diagnosis happened so soon. However, he's lucky that he's still relatively young and hopes that this can serve him well through dialysis and hopefully receiving a new kidney.

On February 14th Mike was admitted to the hospital due to complications surrounding his kidney disease. He has now started dialysis 3 times a week, and is hopeful that it will allow him to get some energy back so he can begin his journey to finding a possible donor match and enjoy time with his family again.

While on this new journey, there have been a number of financial burdens put on his family. If you know Mike he's not one to ask for help. But things have changed. The medical expenses will continue to grow until MIke's new kidney is in place.
