Hey y'all! My name is Ruth Kahssai and I am second-year student at the University of Iowa. I'm a double major in Social Justice and Social Work with a minor in Psychology... and I need your help!
This winter break I will be kicking off the new year (and decade!!) by traveling to the Dominican Republic through the Migration & Social Migration program! This interdisciplinary Social Work and Business program focuses on social entrepreneurship and immigration, engaging government agencies, nonprofits, and youth in the DR. Specifically, we'll get to engage in social justice and socio-political issues such as,
Human rights and migration laws Women's empowerment Clean water and more!
After graduation, I plan on pursuing advocacy and community organizing careers within communities of color while also obtaining dual grad degrees in Social Work and Public Policy. This experiential learning experience not only furthers my understanding of complex social issues, but also allows me to learn alongside of populations that I'm interested in engaging with!
As with most study abroad trips... it's costly! The trip all together is $5,339, with $4,072 being course fees and the rest being out of pocket costs (plane ticket, passport renewal, immunizations ect). My goal of $2,200 would help me cover my out of pocket costs, go towards the course fee that are not covered by scholarship, and the amount that GoFundMe takes out (2.9% of donations and $.30 of every donation).
Any amount truly helps!!! And I'm greatly appreciative to everyone that has taken the time to read this, share it, and/or donate! This opportunity would mean the world!
