For those of you who don't know me - I am a jazz guitarist and composer/arranger who spent a lot of time in Europe and then in New York City. My two most previous recordings were Chimera in 2007 on the Danish Steeplechase label, and my big band recording Transplants, which I released myself in 2009 for a mere $18,000 (can't do that again!). After going through some tough times an opportunity presented itself and in 2013 I moved to Florida from NYC to pursue a doctorate in Jazz Composition at the University of Miami. I graduated there in 2016 and opted to remain in the Sunshine State.
Fortunately, there are some amazing musicians down here in South Florida and I have continued to write and play music. It's almost 9 years since I put anything out and I know quite a few people around the globe would like to hear what I'm doing.
I have been playing with an organ quartet I put together with some of Miami's finest musicians. They are:
David Leon: alto sax and flute
Jim Gasior: organ
Rodolfo Zuniga: drums
We've been getting to the point where I feel it's time to document this great music.
So here we come to the point - I cannot make a record by financing it myself (as much as I would like to!). The funds noted above would be used for:
-Recording and engineer costs
-Paying my musicians (and maybe a special guest or two)
-Mixing and mastering the recording
-Printing a limited number of CDs to sell and distribute (I am thinking 250 at this point)
-Promoting the recording
How soon we go into the studio would of course depend on when we would have the funds so the sooner the better! Once the music is recorded the release is only dependent on mixing and mastering times, and hopefully finding a label, or for me to put it out myself.
As a musician and as an artist, it is necessary to create and document our music. I cannot express enough how important it is for me at this moment to share my music with you.
Some memorable quotes:
A rugged individualist, who can occupy the mainstream or flirt with danger at will.
-Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, Ninth Edition
Channeling the spirited energy of hard-bop with the progressive aesthetics of rock music, Spiegel carves out his own niche in the contemporary jazz scene.
– Troy Collins, All About Jazz
Intellectual to the core, melodic and elegant, [Spiegel's] music will engage and challenge you at the same time.
–Ed Blanco, EJazzNews
Spiegel's solos reveal a sure-footed rhythmic instinct and a harmonic sense which may be rooted in bebop but which also leans towards the future.
– Charles Alexander, Jazzwise (London)
A killer guitarist that’s simply welcome all over the world... A tasty cat you should definitely get to know.
– Chris Spector, Midwest Record
