This page is to assist Russ Owen in his fight against cancer. Russ is a 37 year old husband, father, and son from Philadelphia, MS. He is married to Karrah. He has one daughter, Jade, 12, and two step-daughters, Morgan, 12, and Harper, 5. He has stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.
In January of 2018, Russ was in a car accident that resulted in him requiring back surgery in February. In March, he went to an ENT for a bad sore on the back side of his tongue that had not gotten better with over the counter treatment. He admitted the spot had gotten put on the back burner a couple of weeks longer than it should have due to his surgery. On March 13, 2018, he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. He had an appointment on the 21st with a surgical oncologist in Jackson, MS at UMC. After speaking with her, he decided to go to MD Anderson in Houston to ensure that he was receiving the best treatment available to him.
He has made several trips back and forth to Houston so far. It is a 9 hour trip from his home so he is tired and exhausted. He will have a three part induction chemotherapy treatment on April 5, 2018. About three weeks following that treatment, he will have a surgery to remove the tumor from his tongue and tonsils, remove all of the affected lymph nodes, and reconstruct the tongue. He will be required to stay at the hospital for about a week after surgery due to having a tracheostomy and a feeding tube. Hopefully those will be removed a few weeks after surgery. A month after surgery, he will begin chemo-radiation for 6 weeks.
Due to his previous issues with his back, he has been unable to work since the car accident in January and will continue to be out for a long time in the future. His wife is an employee of the State of Mississippi and is still able to be with him and work at this time. They will have a plethora of expensive medical bills in the future from UMC and MD Anderson plus the added expenses of travel and the lack of income from Russ.
Please help us help this family stay on their feet financially so they will have one less thing to worry about during their fight with cancer!
