RURAL SCHOOLS IN GUATEMALA

The proposed project is to provide assistance to a school in the small village of El Jute in the Zacapa Department of Guatemala.  In general, this assistance will be in the form of repairs and renovations to existing school facilities to create a safe, hygienic and productive environment for students and teachers.  In additional, basic school furniture, desks and learning materials will be included because they are necessary.  Beneficiaries include the current 344 primary school students, future students and their parents.  In addition, the people of El Jute have limited education, high unemployment because they lack education and skills, and no incentive to participate at a school that is poorly equipped and unsafe for their children.  This project's sustainability will address these community needs by breaking the cycle of poverty, unemployment and illiteracy through primary education; in addition to training new teachers and janitorial staff to maintain the facilities.

Working with Rotary Clubs in The United States and Guatemala, we have completed a Community Needs Assessment, inspected the existing facilities and developed a scope of work, budget and timeline.  Once started, this project is estimated to complete in 8 months.

Funds donated to this project will reside in the Rotary Club of Oro Valley Foundation 501(c)(3) and be dispersed directly to the Rotary Club of Gualan in Guatemala as the work is completed in stages.

I am a member of the Rotary Club of Oro Valley (Arizona), an Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Denia (Spain), and a Major Donor of Rotary International.  My Wife and I have personally visited the school in El Jute and have additional information and photographs upon request.
