Coral Spawning Lab Conservation Trust is a not-for-profit organisation (hoping to be a registered UK charity by Spring 2022) raising money through our Running4Reefs initiative to support coral reef restoration.

We’re co-ordinating a team of runners (and cyclists, rowers, etc) around the world to help fundraise and get coral spawning techniques into Mauritius to support reef restoration efforts with New Reef Mauritius.

Coral reefs in Mauritius, like many reefs around the world, have suffered devastating effects of climate change, over-fishing and pollution. The oil spill of MV Wakashio in 2020 has increased the pressure on Mauritian reefs. Therefore there’s now an urgent need for restorative work to take place. The group at New Reef are young and enthusiastic but lack the technology and expertise to tackle this alone. They reached out to us at the Coral Spawning Lab a year ago to ask us to support them in their goals.

The idea is to raise as much money as possible to send a coral spawning/embryo rearing system over to the good folks at New Reef Mauritius. This system will produce genetically diverse corals during reproductive events for the purpose of transplanting onto the reef and restoring a damaged section at a time.

So… why Running4Reefs? Our initial goal is to raise a whopping £50K to make this restoration work a reality. In order to raise money we’re asking people to choose a reef from around the world and run (cycle, swim, kayak, etc) that equivalent distance during 2022.

Some examples of reefs and distances:
Mauritius [Reef] - 65km
Virgin Islands - 96km
Florida Reef - 270km
Belize Barrier Reef - 300km
The Maldives - 800km
Great Barrier Reef - 2300km

All our athletes will be doing their bit and fundraising collectively to achieve our target of £50k.

How can you help?
Please generously support our Running4Reefs initiative by donating as much as you can and by helping to spread the word. And if you're looking to challenge yourself during 2022 then why not take part and help to raise even more money for our worthwhile environmental cause? Contact us at CSL Conservation Trust  for information on how to take part.

You have all of 2022 to donate and support our athletes as they personally challenge themselves while helping to make a difference in this world!
