Running for Hank Ultra Marathon in aid of SCBU

RUNNING A 40 MILE ULTRA MARATHON TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE AMAZING STAFF IN EVERY SPECIAL CARE BABY UNIT IN IRELAND

For the past year, I have been running to raise funds for the charity A Little Lifetime through my website www.runningforhank.com

This year I have been training for a 40-mile ultra-marathon that was supposed to take place in two weeks time in Connemara.

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the race has obviously been cancelled, but I intend to run the distance on the 19th anyway, more than likely doing laps within the allocated 2km radius of my home.

I would very much like to try and raise some money for the staff of the 19 maternity hospitals in the country instead of A Little Lifetime for this particular run.

I don't expect to raise much, but if it is enough to buy a few decent coffees for those working in the Special Care Baby Units looking after our most vulnerable humans at this time and to acknowledge the amazing sacrifices the staff on the front lines are making to keep them safe.

I have had the unfortunate experience of being in an SCBU with both my children. My boy Hank, never got to leave the SCBU alive.

The people who work in this environment are absolute superhero's and deserve our support, especially during a time like this.

I have arranged for the funds to go directly to each SCBU in Ireland. I don't see a penny as it goes directly to an HSE staff member. I don't see a penny.

It's the least we can do

EDIT: I have been diligently monitoring the situation and awaiting new instructions from the government to see if restrictions were to be lifted on the 12th. Alas, they have not, and have been extended for an additional three weeks. This information has influenced the practicality of the run. It could be a lot worse, but I'd run it in my back garden if I had to! Therefore:

I'll be running at night. I'll be running loops in an isolated area within 2km of my home. I'll be running with a mask on. I'll be finished before most get out of bed. (As it's a Sunday morning, I'm sure that could be quite late!) The likelihood of my encountering another person during the run is slim to none. Yet, in the unlikely chance I do, I will endeavour to observe, as I always have, the allocated 2 meters distance between us. I would prefer to run during the day, but by running at night I can ensure strict compliance with social distancing protocol. Thank you.
