<div><strong>Background</strong>
</div>
<div>Scott was diagnosed with ALS in 2021 at the age of 38. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neuromuscular disease that gradually destroys motor neurons that control voluntary muscle movement.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Scott lives in Boston, MA with his wife Laura and two young children, Riley (6) and Eliana (4). Before this disease, Scott was very active and loved traveling, hiking, skiing, and ice hockey. Though ALS has made many things much harder, Scott still finds ways to enjoy time with his family and is grateful for the community that has continually given support.

<div>Tatsuya ("Tats") and Scott met in graduate school at the University of California, San Diego, where they both studied Bioengineering and connected over their shared interests in skiing and hiking. Tats is an avid runner and has run countless marathons, including the Boston Marathon 10 times. After learning about Scott's disease, he presented the idea of running together as a duo team.

<div><strong>Running for ALS</strong>
</div>
<div>Scott and Tats raced in the 50th Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC in October 2025 and finished as the fastest duo team with a time of 3:08:29, successfully qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

<div>Their next race will be the Boston Marathon on April 20, 2026.

<div>Scott and Laura are raising money to give back to several ALS organizations that have helped them throughout this journey over the last several years:

<div><strong>Hope Loves Company</strong>
</div>
<div>Offers resources and support to families affected by ALS and hosts weekend family retreats. Last summer, Scott and his family attended one of these retreats, where they connected with other families facing similar challenges and enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities together.

<div><strong>Team Gleason</strong>
</div>
<div>Offers assistive technology and exciting adventures for people with ALS. In 2024, Scott and Laura got to experience an adaptive whitewater rafting trip in Aspen, Colorado. Given Scott's many challenges, they were so thankful to share this special adventure together.

<div><strong>Compassionate Care ALS</strong>
</div>
<div>Provides mobility equipment, assistive devices, a dedicated retreat center, and ongoing support groups for people affected by ALS. Over the years, CCALS has generously supplied Scott with a variety of adaptive devices that have made daily life more manageable.

</div>
<div>Provides financial support for ALS patients. Both of these organizations played a key role in supporting Laura as she developed her children's book about ALS.
