Running for ALS and Aunt Patsy!

Donation protected
Hello Friends,

I’m reaching out to you to consider supporting my project to run the NYC Marathon in honor of my Aunt Patsy and to support ALS, or to pass it on to someone who might be interested.  My goal is to raise $4000 by November 4, 2018.  We are half-way there!  The goal is now $2100.

This is now my new fundraising site because Youcaring merged with GoFundMe.  FYI - my running blog is at: https://peggysuzukicom.wordpress.com/ and also tells more about other happenings.

Part of my last conversation with Aunt Patsy was telling her my plan to do this. She liked that a whole lot. Patsy was a mentor. Patsy was fearless and kind. She tirelessly connected people and family time and again. She started LITA (Love Is The Answer). She volunteered for the Red Cross. Patsy came to New York as a volunteer with The Red Cross to aid after 9/11. Late in 2014, Patsy was diagnosed with ALS (aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease). My family and I visited her at an impromptu family reunion while she was still feeling well. We got to see her and tell her how much we loved her in person. Patsy passed away swiftly and peacefully on June 25, 2015.

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. "A" means no. "Myo" refers to muscle, and "Trophic" means nourishment – "No muscle nourishment." When a muscle has no nourishment, it "atrophies" or wastes away.  The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their demise. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, people may lose the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe. ALS effects 6000 people per year in the United States and 450,000 worldwide.

Thank you for your participation!  It takes a village.

All my best,
