Running Boston for Hopkinton


I was not planning to run the Boston Marathon this year.
I have been fortunate enough to run it in years past, and I have raised money for two amazing charities. I have been so humbled by all of the support and generosity of my friends and family, it felt like I needed to take a few years off from soliciting donations and support. I figured I would have plenty more opportunities to run and train for Boston along the course. 

Training for the marathon along the course has gotten me through Colby's deployments, moving, and graduate school. The energy, the camaraderie, the excitement, and those hills have been my therapy, my outlet, and my stress relief. But this year, I decided I would sign up for another marathon a few weeks after Boston, and just enjoy training with the Boston Marathon runners along the course. 

Then Colby got orders to the D.C. area and we found out we would be moving out of Massachusetts this summer. I went into somewhat of a panic (for about a million reasons). But one of those reasons was wanting to figure out how I could get into the Boston Marathon. This will likely be my last opportunity to train FOR Boston IN Boston, and I didn't want to lose that. But it was way past all the deadlines, and only a few weeks before the marathon. 

But then Colby heard about a marathon bib becoming available through the Hopkinton Police Association and he jumped on it. He surprised me with an invitational entry to the 2018 Boston Marathon. Now all I had to do was get ready in two months, and, you know, raise 5,500 dollars. 

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Massachusetts and the marathon course, Hopkinton is a small town 26.2 miles outside of Boston. It is where the marathon begins. I can speak from experience when I say that it is beyond incredible to see what the town does to support the runners... not just on race day, but through the countless runs leading up to it. When I took the kids and headed to the Hopkinton Police Department to sign the paperwork, the officer gave them a full tour of the station, complete with sitting in the front seat of a cruiser and turning on the lights and 
being locked up in a cell (I only briefly considered leaving them there). I couldn't be more excited to support the Hopkinton Police Association and run the Boston Marathon this year.
