Everyone on this planet has been affected by Cancer someway or another, whether you have survived it, lost a loved one to it, or know someone battling it at this very moment.
THE PRESENT:
My name is Oleus Lilly, I'm 34 and I live in Longview, TX. The Run Across Texas 2.0, unlike it's predecessor (see below), will stretch from west Texas to east Texas, an 800 mile trek from El Paso to Longview. This event will begin on October 1, 2014 and end on November 1, 2014. The same elements of the first run will be incorporated in this one, ie...sleeping outside, 40 pound pack on the back, educating people on cancer prevention and so fourth. I must run 24-26 miles a day; everyday, to make the 31 day deadline, I joke with friends by saying this will be like running the Boston Marathon everyday for a month-lol. Proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society & Texas Onocology.
THE PAST:
Three years ago, Oleus teamed up with his local American Cancer Society chapter and organized "Run Across Texas". It was an event to raise funds (as well as awareness) to assist in cancer research that would lead to a cure. He literally ran from Ft. Worth, TX to Longview, TX; roughly 200 miles, over the course of 27 days, with only a 40 pound pack on his back, which was filled with supplies, food, and first aid. The cold November and December nights were extreme as he slept outside the majority of the time.
Here is the story behind his run:
Hello, my name is Oleus. I lost my grandmother to cancer a few years ago; in life, she would always joke that I run entirely too much. She said that if I added up the miles that I'd run so far that I could've ran across the state of Texas by now. After losing someone whom I loved so much, I felt lost...in shock, then I became angered and wanted to do something, anything. I decided to take my grandmother's light joke and use it as a catalyst, a inspirational act if you will. Something that would inspire anyone who had cancer to keep fighting, something that would give peace to anyone who had lost a loved one because of it, something that would instill pride in those who had survived this deadly disease.
The first run, didn't pick up media coverage until about 2 weeks after it started, I guess people were a bit skeptical that such an extreme thing could be done. Oleus only raised about $800, but the impact he had on his community was much greater.
