Jacko runs Melbourne Marathon 2020

Over the next 18 weeks I will be training for the Melbourne marathon, this will hopefully be held in October 2020. If the Marathon does get cancelled due to COVID-19, I will still be running a marathon in October, somewhere....
Here are a few reasons why I decided to enter the marathon....
- March 2020, running was nearly one of the only things that was allowed during the COVID pandemic. I would normally have footy training and then cricket pre-season training starting in June/July. With more time on my hands, I started really looking forward to my run each day during the pandemic, and finally started to learn how to run longer distances. By the end of first 2 weeks of my COVID running, I locked in, and thought if there was ever a time to commit to a marathon, this would be it. I needed this carrot, dangling in front of me, or else the 2017-18 Jacko may have reared its large self.
Lauren was also glad I took up running during this time.....
- The reason why I have chosen raise money for Pink Elephants Support Network is that they support couples after miscarriages and premature deaths in Australia. Some of you may know that 2019 was the toughest year for Lauren and I, losing two baby boys at 18 weeks (January 2019) and 16 weeks (December 2019) gestation.
Luckily we have such an amazing family and friends support network that we didn't need the support of an outside community. But through conversation with people and further reading, we discovered how common miscarriages are (1 in 4 pregnancies), and how little they are talked about (Elephant in the room). This is why I have chosen this support network, as some other couples in Australia may not be as lucky as Lauren and I with such supportive family and friends.
We don't want people to go through what we went through alone and feeling under supported. The support network helps to provide comfort, peer groups and information, ultimately helping mental wellbeing.
