Hello to my sweet friends, family, and neighbors:
This year I am running my first half marathon on September 9th and I’ve decided to do it for a cause that hits close to home.
Not too long ago my mom was diagnosed with a Brain Tumor that developed on her cranial nerve leading from the brain to the inner ear. Initially, this tumor affects your hearing and overall balance, but when it progresses, it can threaten brain function and your life.
Her quality of life declined very quickly which had a huge impact on our family. Luckily, she was able to undergo brain surgery to remove the tumor. The surgery went extremely well and she was up and walking within a week.
Approximately 7 days after the removal of her tumor, she experienced Bell Palsy Paralysis. This is paralysis on one side of the face that was caused by damage to the facial nerve during her surgery. Because of this, she would not leave our home, she would not look in her reflection, and she wouldn’t look at any family photos of us because it didn’t look like herself anymore. The bubbly, energetic, beautiful soul I knew as my mom had practically disappeared.
Miraculously, after about 6 months, her face started to gain movement. After a year, her face was almost completely back to normal.
Today, she has no hearing in her one ear from the tumor removal and 95% of her face is completely healed.
I am thankful beyond words that her beautiful spirit is back in action and she’s doing what she loves most; riding her horse. I don’t know what I would have done if things didn’t go this well, and for many people with brain tumors, the story doesn’t end like this.
