Run for Rover
Donation protected
On the 31st December 2019, an out of control bushfire burning in the Badja Forest, west of Narooma, NSW, ravaged the isolated community of Belowra, home to just 9 residents. With only two RFS trucks available to tackle the blaze, there was devastating damage to homes, farms, vegetation, and wildlife within the area.
One local man and long-serving volunteer of the Belowra Rural Fire Brigade, tragically paid the ultimate price whilst trying to escape the fire path. His name was Colin Burns, affectionately known to us as ‘Rover’. A quintessential Aussie bushman, innovative, gentle, humble and kind, Rover always was and will be remembered, as a friend to all those lucky enough to have known him.
Rover was a dedicated member of his community as well as a keen runner. For most of us, Rover came into our lives through the Cooma branch of the international running group, Hash House Harriers, where a small group met each Monday night for a trail run, and more importantly to share a sausage, a beer, and a good yarn.
In the wake of this devastating loss, and in honour of Rover, a handful of Hash House Harriers (including myself and my mum) will be participating in ’Run for Rover’ as part of the Snowies Trail Run Festival - held at Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa in Thredbo NSW on March 1st, 2020.
We are raising funds for the Belowra Rural Fire Brigade, who, due to their size, may struggle to gain much recognition and funding from larger fundraisers. We hope that the funds raised can be used to provide support to the incredible network of volunteers and members of the communities they fought so hard to protect.
Every donation, no matter how big or small is greatly appreciated and 100% of monies raised( minus withdrawal fee from GoFundMe) will be donated to the Belowra Rural Fire Brigade in memory of Rover.
Please Note: I will be personally withdrawing and handling the funds which will be transferred into the bank account of the Belowra Rural Fire Brigade directly. Reciept of this transaction/ donation will be communicated on this page.
