Recently my father, R. (Roger) Donald Tullock was diagnosed with metastatic cancer that in a very short time took his ability to walk. Luckily, both his mind and heart are strong, so he may have up to two years left with us.
After spending three weeks in a hospital in Charleston undergoing tests he has been moved to an in-patient rehabilitation center where he is learning to adjust to his new reality. Though my parents have Medicare based health insurance, costs for his care are accumulating rapidly. They must not only pay for his medical care (one day in the rehab center alone costs $150), but also equipment such as a wheelchair, in home medical bed, etc. As time goes on and the cancer progresses, new expenses that we cannot predict at this time will no doubt arise and need to be paid.
My father has worked hard all his life but is by no means rich. He brought himself and our family into a comfortable middle class life by working his butt off his whole life. He personally taught me through his example what it means to have a work ethic and to support the ones you love. Now it is my turn to try and help give back to him.
Since nobody in our family is much on accepting charity, I wanted to do something active to not only help raise funds, but also to inspire my father to keep fighting. So beginning January 1, 2018 I will begin training to run the 2019 Walt Disney World Marathon (January 9 - 13). With this in mind, I invite you to do one of the following: 1) Pledge a certain value per mile that I complete; 2) Pledge a certain value for every minute or hour it takes me to finish the marathon (my time for the only other marathon that I have ever run was just under 5 hours); 3) Sign up to run with me and get your friends and family to pledge funds based on your performance; or 4) Simply make a one time donation for whatever amount you can afford. All funds raised will go directly towards paying my father's medical bills.
With your support, I can help my father with these expenses and inspire him to keep fighting this cancer and to never give up. The goal is to have my father STANDING at the finish line as I cross it on January 13, 2019.
