Run for Ahmaud Arbery

My name is Eliza Orlic.

Ahmaud Arbery was a 25-year-old black man that was murdered in Glynn County, Georgia on February 23, 2020. The case was not heard about for weeks and at the time I was a resident of Savannah, Georgia which is located in Chatham County, only three counties away from Glynn. I had not heard of this case until May even though I lived so close. Why? Believe it or not, no arrests were made by the time that I had heard of the case. The two men that were on trial were said to have been defending themselves. If it were not for videos taken by people in their homes nearby, justice for Ahmaud Arbery may never have been found. The two men responsible are a father and son and they have been charged with murder and aggravated assault.

On February 23 at 1 pm, Mr. Arbery was going for a run and happened upon a construction site. He did not take anything and he confronted no one. It was not until the father and son started following and yelling at him did conflict arise. Each had a gun of their own. Ahmaud was unarmed. It is now stated that before leaving the scene, they stood over his body while calling him racial slurs.

I like to walk alone to de-stress and get my mind off of everyday problems. Even more than walking, I like to run because it is a good release of anger and stress. Though I have studied many homocide cases in school and at other times, this case gets stuck in my head. This man could not go on an afternoon run without his life being taken from him. This is what happens in this country. This injustice will follow his name and should haunt the two men that took his life. Since coming back from college, I have a job that I go to almost everyday. I have not been able to attend any protests because of it, but this only means that I must find another way to support those who need it most right now. This is a movement. I want to do what is now proven that Ahmaud Arbery could not do. I want to run. I want to run for Ahmaud. I am not a runner but this does not matter. My privilege shows that this is something I can do safely that he could not, so I am going to do it for him.

Until July 4, I will be raising money to donate to whatever black lives matter fund gets voted on the most. Until $100 is raised, I will run one mile for every $5 donated. After that until $200 is raised, I will run one mile for every $10 donated. Until $300 is raised, I will run one mile every $15. I have a goal of $500 to donate. After I hit $300, every $20 donated I will run another mile. I have hopes that people will reach out and want to donate but if they do not, that is okay because I will be donating my own money as this goes on as well. I will be using Go Fund Me because it is a money donation site that I am familiar with and the transaction fee and the donation fees will be paid by me and not taken out of the donations that are made. If I have your contact information, I will send proof of your mile as well as what mile number it was. With every donation please comment what foundation the money should be donated to. Every dollar counts. Every mile count. Help me Run for Ahmaud Arbery. Thank you.
