To get the goal out , this is to raise funds for 3 Napanee families with a combined 8 kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). I am training to run 21 km a half marathon with 9 weeks of training, this is over twice my longest run. Run will be Oct. 21st in Toronto at the Scotia bank run for autism. I personally dislike running, however as my kids have to feel uncomfortable in many of their daily activities I felt I can make myself very uncomfortable while completing this training and challenge.
My name is Derek Blais, myself and my wife Kristy have two daughters whom have been diagnosed with ASD, Arianna and Avery. Arianna (whom is in the cover photo) is 6 years old, non-verbal, has extreme anxieties, and like most kids on the spectrum constant sensory overload. Meaning sounds, smells, touch , taste and visual stimulus can become overwhelming causing tantrums or other breakdowns. Avery whom will be 4 in September is non verbal as well, although she has been making progress with words and our hope is through therapy she will one day be able to communicate with us. Avery has repetitive behaviors as well as issues socializing and sensory overload disorders.
In Napanee the resources are very limited, parents have little options. Parents must pay ten's of thousands of dollars per year for therapy/respite. We personally pay $45/ HR to have Avery in private aba/ibi while they are on a waiting list for a spot to become available. In Kingston wait times have been a year plus. We also pay for private speech therapy, respite and occupational therapy.
From Napanee, Kingston is 45 km each way to IBI center ,meaning we drive 90 km round trip twice a day or 180 km per day to make sure the kids get the resources they need.
Should I exceed the goal I will simply bring more families into divide the funds.
Funds will support therapy, respite, fuel to locations and devices if required.
