2020.09.12 Update

Although our project has been a little sidetracked by this little nuisance called Coronavirus, we hope to restart our campaign soon and hopefully we can open our Youth Center in the next 12 months. The location has been prepared and we have plans laid out for our Center. In the meantime,  with your help, we financed 15 other projects that were related to Coronavirus. Rest assured, every donation related to the fund is tracked and will eventually be spent for the cause you donated to.

Growing up
, my favorite day of the week was Monday. As soon as the final bell of the school day rang, my best friends and I would spring through the school gates, running more than walking, trying to be first in front of the little white door of the Computer Lab at the “Children's Palace” in Zalau (“Palatul Copiilor”).

Our teacher was young and charming, always wearing a bright smile as we dashed through the door, jumping over each other to get a seat as close as possible to the keyboards. The 6 “personal computers” at the “Palace” were the only PCs in the whole town in 1986 when I started attending the class, and we were in awe.

Since I was 7 until I turned 15, I attended the Center's computer club religiously, every Monday. Yes, we used to play games, it was part of the package. But we also wrote out first computer programs there, and it instilled in us a desire to be better and smarter, to try hard to be first.

I loved that feeling, and I still miss it today. That desire to be first, be it at Math or Ping Pong, it didn't matter, as long as you were first, I want my children to feel it as well.

My own candid memories of growing up around the “Children’s Palace” in Zalau are a big reason for deciding to sponsor a Youth Center for the Romanian Community in Chicago, through the Romanian United Fund. I will donate the 1,200 SQF space for the RUF Youth Center for $1/per year, for the next 3 years. However, we still need to furnish the center, we need to purchase chairs and tables, desks, computers, whiteboards, a projector, a screen, and a lot more.

Voice your opinion and help me and the Romanian United Fund shape our future Youth Center and define our programs. Fill our survey: https://rufmlehene.typeform.com/to/KMzYEE
