Ruby Roo's Fight Against Cancer

Donation protected
This is the story of a beautiful, happy, face licking, body leaning, squeaky ball chewing, popcorn loving, beach enjoying zoomy enthusiast.  She is the light of our little family and is deeply loved.

Ruby Roo is 2 year old Pitbull/Pointer.  We named her Ruby because of her color and added the Roo in honor of the Bonaroo Music and Arts Festival where her human poppa and momma met.  At her daycare the Wags Club she is affectionetlly known as "Ruby Freckle Feet".   On June 14th she will turn 3 years young.

We have had the pleasure of being Ruby's parents since March 2015 when she was about 9 months old.

She had a rough start to life.  When we adopted her from Bullies and Buddies Rescue in Redondo Beach, CA we were informed she had a bad leg.  Apparently a couple of months prior she was taken to the South LA Shelter with a back left leg that was broken in 3 places due to a car accident.   Prior to adopting her we were unsure how her leg would affect her long term health.  At the end of the day  though, we knew she was meant to be with us.

For about 6 months Ruby would limp when she had long play days or from running up the stairs.  However, she never let this get in the way of her fun time.  She continued through her life as if she had no barriers.  Running, playing fetch, and jumping to greet people are top on her list.  Eventually, not limping at all.  Nothing can stop our girl! She even had the honor of being in Barkpost's new book titled Dogs and Their People.

Flash forward to the past few weeks:
We recently noticed that Ruby had an enlarging growth in her groin area. Initially we assumed it was a hernia and we took her to the vet to be assessed. We started to mentally prepare for surgery.  The vet explained that she thought it was in fact a swollen and inflamed lymph node.  She aspirated the lymph node and sent the sample off to be assessed. Those results were not conclusive, but they were "highly concerning" for lymphoma cancer.  At this point we were told to go to an oncologist.  Our hearts dropped.

We then went to City of Angels Veterinary Cancer Treatment Center and had a procedure that aspirates all of her lymph nodes to better determine if she had cancer.  They were so kind to her and Ruby was her happy charming self.  We maintained hope that there was a different explanation besides cancer.

Unfortunetly though, we got the results and it was confirmed that Ruby has "T-cell Lymphoma".  We were devastated. Our plans to spend the next 10+ years with her, for her to meet our kids, and be an amazing big sister had vanished.

Despite this horrible news, we remain steadfast in our commitment to give her a full and joyful life.

She has now started a chemotherapy regimen that will last 6 months assuming she responds well to the chemo treatment. With Chemo, she has been given a 9 month prognosis.

So...we are going to try and make the best of those 9 months. According to the Dr, she won't experience any pain and should be her normal self for much of the time.

The cost of her full cancer treatment regimen including procedures already performed will total between $10,000-$12,000. Each visit to the oncologist consists of a blood test, chemotherapy treatment, and other medications in the CHOP protocol to help our girl.

We have set this page up to help with costs to help prolong her life so she can have a chance in completing her bucket list and to have as many amazing experiences possible.  Also, so that we can love her for just a little while longer.

Please do not feel you have to donate.  Sending positive vibes, hugs, and loving our girl in itself is so greatly appreciated.  We hope that knowing about our story will help you pick up on any thing odd in your pet and to address it quickly.

We appreciate any and all support from our friends, family, and fellow dog loving network.  We have already received many letters, calls, online expressions of love, and an amazing care package from the Live Like Roo Foundation.  We have applied for financial assistance through various non-profits and are secure in our decision to pursue medical treatment as long as she is in good spirits and is not suffering.   We are so appreciative of our in-person and online community. We will keep you updated with her progress, links to her various pages/accounts, and we hope that you will join in on her bucket list fun.
