My name is Ruben. I'm a Scot, from a small Hebridean island called Lismore and I want to be a circus performer.
I completed a Higher National Diploma in Theatre Performance in Edinburgh where movement and music emerged as my strengths. During this time I began to brew a vision for a captivating stage show incorporating acrobatics, music, theatre and dance. This idea was inspired by my admiration for the music of Martyn Bennett, who brought new life and colour to Scottish traditions, songs and sagas.
In January of this year I was beyond delighted to be awarded a place on Circomedia's FDA in Circus and Physical Theatre based in Bristol. It is a brilliant course and the only place in the UK where I can get the education that will give me the skills to turn my circus/performance visions and dreams into reality.
My hope is that one day I can illustrate the beauty and intrigue of Scottish culture through dance, circus and theatre. I imagine an adaptation of Burns's 'Tam O'Shanter, a 'Ceilidh Circus' with aerial flings and infectious pulse; arresting sounds and plenty of audience involvement. Perhaps it will be called 'The Highland Fling'. I want to tour the show to audiences around the globe and envisage an outreach programme where cast members offer workshops to community organisations.
However, I cannot get student loan funding for the tutorial fees of the first year of this course because the qualification level is the same as that of the HND I have already completed. I can, thankfully receive a student loan for years two and three.
Can you help me further my dream with a contribution toward my first year tutorial fees?
I need to raise £7700 altogether and submit £2700 of this in September to secure my place.
Any size of contribution however small would be a step towards this goal.
