UPDATE: Jonny is free from detention (thanks to you!) but still has a long road ahead of him to win his immigration case. For this reason, raised the goal by $7K to help Jonny and his family afford an attorney. We have identified a good attorney who will take the case for that amount. I know that the world is crazy right now, but if you can spare anything to help Jonny stay with his son in the U.S., please do.
Jonatan Funes Morales, or "Jonny," is a beloved member of the Austin community. He has served customers at Bomb Tacos since 2012, and has managed the location at the White Horse bar since about 2014. Jonny has made literally thousands of visitors to Austin feel at home with his big smile, positive attitude, and delicious food. Night after night, Jonny's there, working hard to keep Austin's music scene well-fed and fueled up to keep on dancing and appreciating live music.
In January 2020, Jonny was snatched by ICE in front of his eleven-year-old son, Jonatan Saul, while they were on their way to school. Jonny is currently in an ICE detention facility in Pearsall, Texas.
Lots of immigrants have to fight their entire case behind bars. But because of Jonny's 15 years in Austin, as well as dozens of letters of support from friends and family, the immigration judge set bond. The bad news is that the amount is $15,000, which is beyond the financial reach of Jonny and his family.
The immigration judge has given Jonny until March 20, 2020 to pay bond, or he will have to fight his case from detention .
