Hello, I’m Jodie! I’m a non-binary paramedic living in Brighton and I’m trying to raise funds to support my gender confirmation surgery coming up soon.

I’ve felt so inspired by the trans people reaching out to our beautiful community of LGBTQIA+ people and allies for help to cover their healthcare costs so they can live comfortably in their bodies, with the care they deserve. Its wonderful that everyone comes together to help each other, but its also incredibly frustrating and painful that we have to go about things this way because the government doesn’t see healthcare for trans people as something they need to fund properly. The waiting lists for gender affirming healthcare are huge… you can take a look at the figures here: https://gic.nhs.uk/appointments/waiting-times/.

As a paramedic with the NHS, I am passionate about and committed to providing a universal free healthcare service to all. As I’m sure many of us have, I’ve felt the brunt of the government’s cuts to this incredible service over the years and seen the sacrifices we’ve all had to make and grief we’ve all had to cope with because this government doesn’t see the NHS as something they need to fund sufficiently.

Last year, my chest dysphoria got so bad that I realised I would need to make gender affirming surgery a top priority by seeking out private healthcare options, despite this putting a significant strain on me financially. The appointments I’ve had with transgender healthcare professionals privately and through the GIC have been vital for my physical and mental health. I’m not going to stop fighting for all of us to have access to the universal comprehensive healthcare we deserve. Trans Pride remains a protest and we are fighting for our right for dignity, respect and understanding as we move through the world.

My surgery date has been set for 21st April 2022 and I have opted for the interest free payment plan so I don’t have to pay the lump sum all in one go. I will be raising funds over the next few months to pay this back in instalments. I’ve opted for this so I can have the surgery sooner rather than later.

If you can donate anything towards my surgery, I would be so grateful. Every donation, however big or small, is so so appreciated. Some lovely friends are also offering prints of their artwork as well as stickers, t-shirts, candles and beautiful soap as a thank you for donations, which I will post to you anywhere in the UK! Thank you so much for reading this and all the queer love and solidarity to you <3
