One of the leading causes of maternal mortality is unsafe abortion and while nearly all abortions (92%) in developed nations are safe, more than half of all abortions (55%) in developing nations are unsafe. Five million women are hospitalized each year for treatment due to abortion-related complications, such as hemorrhage and sepsis; unsafe abortions account for 13% of maternal deaths globally, or 70,000 deaths per year.
Unsafe abortion can lead to loss of economic productivity, increased burden on public health systems, stigma, long-term health problems like infertility, and death. On the other hand, studies show that access to safe and affordable abortion services, contraception, and family planning reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies, reduce the number of abortions, and most importantly reduce the number of maternal deaths.
As the first director of the Reproductive Health Division at the United States Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, Dr. Roger Rochat has dedicated his life to reducing maternal mortality from unsafe abortion. As the current director of graduate studies for the Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory University, Roger has spent decades providing mentorship, friendship, and guidance to hundreds of students, faculty and community members.
