RSPCA Burton's rising vet bills

Tax deductible
Since January 2022, vet costs have gone up drastically, and with the added issue of not being able to fundraise during Covid, we are struggling financially now more than ever. We spend approximately £6000 - £7000 on vet bills per month.
We are noticing more and more sick animals are coming to us as owners cannot afford the vet bills either so we are their only hope. We are having to send animals for emergency and urgent operations every week to ensure that they are not in pain and are having the treatment needed to protect their lives.
We have had many poorly animals recently that have needed extensive treatment and we are sadly finding our funds getting lower and lower. We do not want to get to the point where we cannot help these poor animals so we NEED YOUR HELP.
RSPCA Burton-on-Trent & District branch is virtually self-funded and relies heavily on public donations.

All of our animals have vet checks and it is standard for our animals to be neutered/spayed, vaccinated and any necessary blood tests. We find that a very common operation needed is a dental, which on average costs £300 per animal. If the animal needs teeth extracting then this can make the cost higher.

Here are a few examples of some of the animals recently that have needed vital treatment:

  • Molly is a ten-year-old ShihTzu who came to us in horrendous condition. She has been in a foster home for a while now and has sadly had many health issues during this time. Molly has suffered with anaemia, sore skin, a swollen foot, puss coming from her teeth and sore/dry eyes. Along with all of this, she was underweight too. We first let her put some weight on, treated her with anti-inflammatory for her foot, eye drops and medicated baths for her skin. It soon became clear that her swollen foot and sore eyes would be a lifelong problem so she is being treated with long term medication and has to wear a special boot on her foot. She has recently gone in for a dental as her teeth were rotten and causing her a lot of pain. She had the majority of her teeth removed and the infection had spread into the bone. Due to the bad infection, her jaw sadly fractured during the procedure. Molly is now recovering and is also being treated for infected ears. She will need to go under anaesthetic again at some point as she has some mammary lumps that need removing. This poor girl just can't seem to catch a break! Her foster parents have done a wonderful job and will be adopting her once she is better.

  • Kitkat is an eight year old female cat who has not long arrived with us due to her owner being unable to provide the treatment needed for her poorly ears (they had turned black and sore). She was sent up to the vets straight away and it was confirmed that it is most likely cancerous and her ears need removing in the hope that it hasn't spread anywhere else. She went up for a double ear amputation on the 1st of March and is now recovering.
  • Estimated cost for ear amputation: £340

  • Ruffy is an eight year old Shar Pei who has found herself here as her previous owner sadly passed away. Shar Pei's are notorious for ear, eye and skin problems so we were sadly not surprised when we saw that Ruffy had a TECA (total ear canal ablation) at her previous vets and was now suffering with her eyes. The vets have advised that she needs entropion surgery to correct her eyelids from turning in and causing irritation and infection.
  • Estimate cost for entropion surgery: £972

The above animals are a tiny fraction of the animals in need of our help. In order to continue helping these animals, we desperately need your help as our branch heavily relies on donations from the public.
