<div>Thanks to our fundraising campaign, he now has a small piggy bank. But with that he can barely pay a year's rent if something happens to him. He doesn't have a pension to fall back upon.

<div>He is getting older and the years are starting to count. As you maybe know, he is struggling with his health.

<div>Hebben jullie een momentje voor Lawrence, ongelukkige verkoper van de daklozenkrant in het Westerpark in Amsterdam?

<div>Deze meneer is van het jaar drie keer gevallen met de fiets. Nu heeft hij een hernia. Maar Lawrence kan niet rustig aandoen en moet blijven doorwerken. Lawrence leeft van de verkoop van de daklozenkrant en van de donaties die hij ontvangt. Het is voor hem elke maand spannend of hij de huur van 450 euro voor zijn kamer van vijf (!) vierkante meter kan blijven opbrengen. Zo niet, dan staat hij op straat…

<div>Lawrence is al op leeftijd en heeft ook last van andere gezondheidsklachten. Hij slikt een aantal medicijnen. En misschien is een operatie voor zijn hernia nodig. De kosten van een hernia-operatie: tot 8000 euro. Lawrence heeft helaas geen tanden meer. Een kunstgebit zou hem erg helpen, want die heeft hij niet. De kosten van een kunstgebit: 1300 euro.

<div>Als wij ziek zijn, krijgen we steun van de overheid. Maar Lawrence niet… Hij heeft geen zorgverzekering en geen recht op inkomen bij ziekte. Hij mag geen gebruik maken van ons sociale vangnet, omdat hij oorspronkelijk uit Californië komt en niet uit Nederland. Ook al leeft, woont en werkt hij al 20 jaar hier!

<div>Do you have a moment for Lawrence, who sells the ‘Z-krant’ (paper sold by homeless people) in Amsterdam Westerpark area?

<div>Lawrence fell three times from his bicycle this year, resulting in a hernia. Unfortunately, Lawrence can't take it easy and must keep working to make a living. Lawrence lives of Z-krant sales and the donations he receives. Every month it is uncertain whether he can continue to pay the rent of 450 euros for his room of five (!) square meters. If not, he's on the street...

<div>Lawrence is already of age and has some other health issues for which he takes a number of medications. On top of that he may need surgery for his hernia, which would potentially cost up to 8000 euros. Furthermore Lawrence no longer has any teeth, so dentures would help him a lot. The cost of dentures: 1300 euros.

<div>When we are sick, we receive support from the government. This is not the case for Lawrence. He has no health insurance and no right to income in the event of illness. He is not allowed to use our social safety net because he is originally from California/US and not from the Netherlands, even when he has been living and working here for 20 years.

<div>As you can imagine, Lawrence is more surviving than living.
