Rowing the Atlantic Ocean Solo for Charity
Hi, I am Mel. I am a Dutchie who has lived in exciting London (UK) for almost 6 years, and is now living in beautiful Switzerland.
In 2023 I will row solo and unsupported 3000 miles/ 5550km across the Atlantic Ocean as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. I will do this in support of Interplast Holland and Interplast Switzerland.
I have been working as a hand therapist for over 22 years and I am extremely passionate about this specialised profession, hence my team’s name HandsAtlantic, and the charities that I chose. I have been part of a few surgical missions in Africa which has been an incredible experience on so many different levels. And a total eye-opener that there is still so much we can do to reach out.
Interplast shares medical knowledge, treatment, and experience with under-resourced communities around the world. Hand surgery and subsequently hand therapy is a big part of this.
All over the world, people suffer from diseases that leave bad scars and disfigurements. Accidents involving burns or animal bites are also very common. Children suffer the most and often have to bear the consequences for the rest of their lives.
The Interplast surgical teams are experienced plastic surgeons, anaesthetists, operating theatre nurses and therapists who travel to crisis areas in their spare time - free of charge - and operate on and treat people in need.
The Challenge
Rowing solo across the Atlantic in this premier event in ocean rowing, will push me to my physical and mental limit. With reason, more people have climbed Mt. Everest than have rowed across the Atlantic.
The mental and physical endurance will result in a life-changing achievement, that will never be forgotten.
So by doing a life-changing challenge, I will be changing the lives of children and adults living under-resourced communities around the world who need medical care.
