Rosario-Flores family disaster relief fund after hurricane Maria
I want to thank all of you who have inquired about the wellbeing of my family in Puerto Rico, particularly my mother Iris Yolanda Flores. I am certain that the situation is temporary and that we will soon see the light at the end of the tunnel. But until then, I decided to take the courage in a proactive way to expand my efforts to continue supporting my family for the long road ahead.
Today, more than 40 days later after the hurricane hit, I am reaching out to you and anyone willing to help, because sadly, my mother and 75 percent of the island is still without electricity. Access to water comes and goes. Although I was able to communicate with her before, for some reason I can no longer do that, as the communication is intermittent, at best. Like everyone, I thought that much more progress would have been made by this point, but sadly, we are living in a different reality.
The awful conditions make day-to-day tasks a tremendous difficulty. Internal communications, making medical appointments, getting medicine and making monetary transactions to cover basic necessities is nearly impossible. The congestions of traffic are unbearable. I personally have sent over 15 boxes with batteries, groceries, lanterns and first-aid kits via USPS and only four have arrived at this point. My family has still not received the first-response funds from FEMA, yet. The electrical generators, which are not meant to work overtime, needs to be replaced and repairs to the infrastructure of all my family’s homes are gravely needed.
Your donations will go toward basic needs that we all take for granted, such as buying medication, groceries, gasoline for the generators and of course for bigger items such buying new generators and fixing structural damages.
As you all know, On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, Puerto Rico woke up to the worst nightmare in the history of the nation. Hurricane Maria made landfall as a category 5 storm with winds of 150 miles per hour, raining down on the Island for over eight hours.
According to the National Hurricane Center, hurricane-force winds extended up to 30 miles from Hurricane Maria’s center, while tropical storm-force winds extend outward for up to 125 miles. Just to paint a quick picture, Puerto Rico is 100 miles by 36, much smaller than the width of the storm.
Pictures and videos of the conditions on the island do not do justice to the truly unreal living conditions and catastrophic damage left behind for the island’s families. The entire area is devastated in an unprecedented way. There is not an exact number of deceased, but it is estimated to be over 50. The number of people missing is 112. There has been no electricity, Internet or phone service.
The natural resources that attracted so many tourists from all over the world are devastated. The agriculture industry such as entire fruit and coffee farms have been decimated. Many animals died including cattle, horses and autochthonous birds.
Many people have lost their jobs, and thousands have left the island for the mainland. This means fewer resources for the local economy.
This cause means so much to me because this is simply who I am - a proud Puerto Rican. I am them and they are me…echoing Ricky Martin’s song, “I am made of you.”
My family is from Caguas, a beautiful city called “The Heart of Puerto Rico/El Corazon de Puerto Rico” because it is located where the heart would be in relation to the body. Home is where your heart is and my heart is in Caguas Puerto Rico, always! From my heart to yours, if your heart moves you, I encourage you to please contribute now. I am planning in managing this campaign for the next three months.
Maria hit our hearts but not our spirit neither our essence, that was untouched!
