Rory’s Kick Cancer’s Ass Campaign

Rory R. has been a resident of Los Osos, CA for 24 years.   During the last 18 years of her career, she worked with people who have developmental challenges.  This was not a high-paying job, she did it for the love of the work and the people she served.  Now, she faces huge health challenges! She has not worked since April 2018 and was recently hospitalized for most of the month of August 2018.  During that time, she discovered that she has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.  It’s in the early stages, so we are optimistic, but our hearts are heavy because her insurance does not cover all of her needs.

Rory is now at Norris USC Hospital in Los Angeles receiving chemotherapy.  Her life partner of 30 years, Sydney, is a permanently disabled Licensed and Marriage Family Therapist.  Since 2001, Sydney has worked very little -- and the time that she does work  -- she is devoted to providing therapy for preschool children who are at-risk or have faced trauma.  She also supervises interns who are getting ready for their LMFT licensure.

These are two people who have devoted their careers to their fellow man, and now they need some support from the rest of humanity!  Both Rory and Sydney recently retired and live on a fixed incomes.  Rory has been Sydney's primary care giver since 2001, but now the tables have turned.  Rory is a thoughtful, loving and funny partner who loves Sydney and her cats deeply. 

We were told Rory's treatment, which will take at least 2 years, will cost upwards of $1,000,000. 

It is difficult to be in this position, to ask for help, for what insurance doesn’t cover.
