Rooster River Flood

I'm reaching out to you all because my family was involved in a disaster that has had a sudden and awful impact on us. On Tuesday, 9/25/2018, my world was changed and my family will never be the same. My husband and I have two children and three cats. On that afternoon and evening, an incredibly torrential rain caused the Rooster River on the border of Fairfield and Bridgeport Connecticut to overflow, inundating the ground floor of the condominium we live in with four feet of water. The water actually reached a height of about 18 inches past window height. One of our beloved cats drowned, and virtually all of our possessions were destroyed. Due to a gap between our homeowners insurance and the flood insurance of the condominium, our possessions were not covered by insurance.

However, the big issue we are now dealing with is that we are homeless. Our condominium unit was, of course, rendered unlivable. We reached out to the Red Cross, but they cannot do anything until FEMA declares the location a disaster area. We reached out to 211 and made an appointment for a CAN evaluation but it turned out there was nothing they could really do for us; if we were not a family unit they could set us up in a shelter, but this was not an option for a family.

All of this has made me very humble, and scared. I do need help to get shelter.
