The Maré Arts Center is home for the renowned choreographer Lia Rodrigues and her dance company.
The center was born of a partnership between Redes da Maré, a non-profit organisation founded and run by Eliana Soares, born and raised in the community; and Cia. de Danças Lia Rodrigues, a professional dance group led by award-winning choreographer Lia Rodrigues.
In addition to the company, the center hosts art events, lectures, civil action campaigning and dance classes to students of all ages, from 8 to 84 years old.
Over a decade of intense use and of the rainy summers of Rio have brought the roof to a state of disrepair: holes and an aging structure are threatening the building’s future - and people’s lives.
This calls for urgent action. To ensure the next 10 years will be even more meaningful than the last, we’ve planned for a solid and modern solution, designed to make Maré an example for sustainable development.

The project, created by architect Marcelo Lipiani, is designed to strengthen the cover, increase the usability, and bring in further development for the surrounding area.
A short story:
In the summer of 2019, right before the pandemic hit the world, I got the chance to visit the Maré Arts Center as part of the creation process of Nororoca, a dance piece made by Lia Rodrigues in collaboration with the Norwegian national dance company, Carte Blanche (NO).
The travel to Rio de Jainero, the work in the art center, and the encounter with the people who work, study and contribute to it, was a remarkable experience.
The strong sense of community, generosity and solidarity exuded from every corner of this space.

Operating from a 1200 sq. meter warehouse at the entrance of one of 16 communities of the Maré complex, the Maré Arts Center is a reference in arts, culture, and civil action. For over 10 years, it has been a safe haven from violence and a beacon for inclusion for over 140,000 people at the biggest favela conglomerate of Rio de Janeiro.
It's ultimate mission and vision is to stimulate inclusion, identity-building, and offer a pathway to a better future - for both locals and everyone else.
In one of the countries worst hit by the pandemic, the Maré Arts Center also serves currently as storage and distribution point for food and basic items for the thousands affected by COVID-19 - whose lives now depend on this relief.
This fundraiser is a chance for me to support this meaningful project, to contribute to it's future and all the people who are involved in it.
The money that is collected here will be transferred directly to the renovation project in Maré.
