Roof over her head

No one is exempt from life's challenges, but not everyone has given a life full of service like Elizabeth.

I work as as an independent contractor for DirecTV, and I sell it door to door. I've talked with thousands of people over the past six years, and listened to their stories in the comfort of their own homes. None of them have impacted me as much as Elizabeth.

After inviting me into her home with hopes that I could save her a little bit of money on her television bill each month, I asked her why it was so important for her to save money. With the most humble words she could find, she simply told me that "things are kind of tight".

I could sense there was more to it, so I began to ask her to explain. Reluctantly, she began to describe some recent financial difficulties that she's been having. Over the course of the next hour, I listened as she began to tell me about her life.

I learned that Elizabeth, this 75 year old woman, had lived a life full of service. After 12 years of trying to have children, she and her husband decided to adopt. They immediately realized what an impact that had on that sweet baby boy, and they wanted to do more. They didn't quit. They ended up adopting more children, and soon after became foster parents. She has fostered over 80 children, and she claims each one of them as her own. With some, she had a special connection. She and her husband adopted 9 children- 4 of which have disabilities.

About 10 years ago, her husband was diagnosed with  dementia. After caring for him for several years, his time had come. Now a widow, she was left to care for the other children that lived at home- the youngest being  9 years old.

Almost a year ago, her next door neighbor offered to replace her worn-out roof. Over the course of the next few months, with much sacrifice, she was able to gather up just enough. After paying him $2,500, she woke up the next morning to find his house vacant. He was gone, and he took the money with him; and with no written agreement, she was left with no extra money and her damaged roof.

Now, 7 months later, she has still yet to hear from him. Then, I saw an empty spot in the kitchen about the size of a dishwaher, so I asked if she was remodeling. She told me that just a few weeks ago, somehow, her dishwasher had caught on fire. Luckily, her 14 year old son noticed something was wrong, and they were able to get the fire department there to prevent the fire from spreading.

It wasn't until I left the house that I realized the poor condition her roof is in. She has lived a life of service, and her faith has carried her through her difficult times. She's a great example of selflessness, and of putting a roof over so many innocent heads. Now, I humbly request your help in putting a brand new roof over hers. Any money leftover will be used to replace her dishwasher. Thank you in advance for any and all donations!
