Ron's Urgent Cancer Treatment

In July 2015 our much-loved Ron was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare and terminal form of blood cancer. He was hospitalized immediately as the holes in his bones were leaking calcium into his bloodstream.

Ron is loving husband to Deb (coming up to their 45th wedding anniversary), father to Scott and Brett and adopted son Julian. They have 8 grandchildren ranging from 20 down to just 3 years old.

He has hundreds of former Police and work colleagues.

The news was a shock. He was very close to dying from heart attack or organ shutdown.

After diagnosis Ron remained the most positive patient, even though the remainder of 2015 saw rounds of chemotherapy and the intensely painful harvesting of stem cells, leading ultimately to a stem cell transplant on 21 January 2016.

A life-saving stem-cell transplant involves intensive chemotherapy to rid Ron of his current stem cells/bone marrow. Then the transplant begins, filtering new stem cells into his body. Forcing him to stay in the most purest of incubation for months as his body regenerates brand new healthy stem cells and develops a new immune system.

That transplant was hoped to give him 5 years, however it only gave him 18 months, and in May of 2017 Ron and his extended family received the devastating news the cancer had returned. Remaining strong and courageous, as always, Ron commenced chemo again and on 16 November 2017 he underwent his second painful stem cell transplant.

He is currently in Liverpool Hospital in Stage 2 of that treatment and at the peak of the hard times with high temperatures, infection and intense bone pain. The medical staff are keeping a close eye on him whilst they try to build up his white blood count.

After this transplant, the medication he needs will be $87,000 a course. It is not yet known how many courses he will need. The new medicine is not yet on the PBS and therefore is not subsidized.

Ron is an enormously respected former NSW Police Officer of 17 years service. He has served his community with the highest integrity, passion and commitment, working at Central, Darlinghurst, the Mounties for 3 months (until they realized he couldn’t ride a horse!), Ingleburn, Macquarie Fields as a member of the South-West TRG, then Parramatta Intelligence. He has helped literally thousands of people.

Ron’s working life after the Police was eclectic, having worked with Westfield as Security Manager for the Lowy family; he has been Kerry Packer’s driver; his last job was as Ranger at The Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan.

He has an enormous family of friends and it is now that
Ron and his family need your help – your support – your hope – your kindness and, most importantly your generosity.

This is an unbearable, life-changing and confronting time for his family.

The need is imperative.

The money will go directly to supporting Ron’s treatment to stay alive after he leaves Hospital.

Your support, love, prayers and most importantly, your contributions, are so very much appreciated.
